Women have long struggled for equality and have often been denied access to education and employment. An

interesting and complicated example of someone who experienced this discrimination is Coraelia Sorabji, who was

able to clear hurdles faced by women in Indian society in a time when women had very little freedom. However,

despite her many achievements, decisions she made later in fife have made her a controversial figure in Indian
history to this day,

Born in 1866 in a Christian family in Deviali in northeastern India, Sorabji was the youngest of seven children,
Members of the highest caste in India’s class system, her parents valued education and attempted to get each of
their daughters admitted ro Bombay University. All of their efforts failed until school authorities finally admitted
Sorabji in 1884, making her the first woman allowed to attend university in India.

Graduating from Bombay University at the top of her class with an English Literature degree in 1887, Sorabji
was ¢ligible for a scholarship at a university in England to continue her education, [ 1], Bombay University
rejected her scholarship application because of her gender. Determined to stndy at Oxford University, Sorabji
applied directly lo Somerville College. one of Oxford University’s first women’s colleges. At the same time, Lord
and Lady Hobhouse, strong advocates of female education who had lived in India for some time, heard of Sorabji's
plight and wrote an open letter to The Times, a London newspaper, to raise funds for her edecation.

Both efforts met with success, and Sorabji arrived at Oxford University as already something of a celebrity.
She Began forming relationships with intellectual and influential supporters, including deans of various colleges, who
would shape her career and philosophy. Although they made it possible for her to study law when the only
subjects at Oxford University available to women were English literature, teaching, and medicine. they continued to
hoid politically and socially conservative views. They claimed that Indians could not rule themselves and that
women were inferior to men. Sorabji began to absorb some of these beliefs despite being « living example to the
contrary.

Sorabji spent the next three years preparing for and passing the Bachelor of Civil Law exam, something no

Western society has a history of promoting and celebrating perfectionism in fields such 2s business, sports, and
the aris. One example of this is Henry Royce, who co-founded the Rolls-Royce Motor Car Company in 1904 and
called upon his employees to seek perfection in everything they did. To Royce and many other engineers during
the rapid industrial development of the time, anything less than perfection was considered failure. This belief
remains part of many people's public and personal lives today, yet studies indicate that it may be doing us more

harm than good.

Perfectionism is often incorrectly defined as conscientiousness, which is the tendency to set goals and work
hard ro achieve them. Psychologists suggest, however, that perfectionism is not what people do but how they think
about themselves. For instance, if a worker who is conscientious but not a perfectionist fails in a task, they may feel
disappointed, but it will not affect their selEesteem. The equally hard-working perfectionist responds to the same
bump in the road with a sense of being not good enough, What sets them apart is their propensity 20 base their
self-worth on achieviug goals.

Is it possible to quantify perfectionism? One (ool used by psychologists, Frost's Multidimensional Perfectionism
Scale (FMPS)。 measures anxiety regarding mistakes and doubts about actions, nervousness about familial
expectations and evaluation, excessively high personal standards, and concern with precision and order. Dr, Gordon
Fiett, an expert in psychology who uses FMPS to identify perfectionist patients, has also attempted fo measure
some of the health risks they face. For people diagnosed with chronic ilinesses such as Crohn's disease. Flett’s
rescarch linked perfectionism with poor ability to cope emotionally with symptoms and lower quality of life. In
another study on cardiac rehabilitation patients, he found that perfectionists recover more slowly than other
patients.

Despite these negative findings, the feats of some famous perfectionists are hard to ignore. Champion tennis
player Serena Williams. a self-described perfectionist, admits to feeling frustrated if she does not win every point.

Have you wondered why some people use their jeft hand instead of their right hand for writing? Lelthanders
are much less common than right-handers, making up only about 10-15% of the world’s population. Although in the
past, left-handedness was viewed unfavorably. research has unveiled its positive aspects. However, even with a
betler understanding of the benedits of left-handedness, its underlying biological causes continue to be a mystery to
scientists.

Historically, left-hander, or “lefties,” have faced hardship. In medieval Europe, the ieft band was associated
with witchcraft because witches were believed to use that hand to convey curses. Later, in the 15th and 16th
centuries, Jeft-handed people were accused of devil worship. The Devil was thought to give blessings to his
worshippers with the left hand instead of the right. which was used by Christian priests. Lefties were often
unjustly linked to criminal activities by 19th-century thinkers such as physician Cesare Lambraso and. in addition.
were still being described as awkward or clumsy by Brilsh educational psychologist Cyril Burt in the mid-20th
century. Even the word “Ieft” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word が7 which means weak or broken.

Despite a history of negativity toward left-handedness, some of its favorable aspects have been revealed
through research. One study conducted on lefties at University College London in 2003 showed that, on the whole,
they are better at devising multiple solutions to a single problem. In 2006, Australian researchers found faster links
between the left and right sides of left-handers’ brains, leading to more efficient processing of information and giving
them an advantage in activities such as video games and sports. There are many successful professional athletes
who are left-handed, including Wayne Gretzky, considered to be the greatest ice hockey player ever, and Clayton
Kershaw, one of the top pitchers in Major League Baseball today. Left-handedness is sometimes an advantage for
athletes. [ |], a left-handed pitcher may be favored by a manager because many batters have a difficult time
adjusting to their pitches.

There have always been famously creative left-handed people. The Renaissance painter Leonardo da Vinci,

Imagine a painting of a prince on horseback set in a heavy gold frame in a roomful of richly-dressed people
willing to pay millions of dollars for it. The art world can seem, to those on the outside, to be one of showy glamour,
involving vast amounts of money in numerous currencies. It is also somewhat shrouded in mystery. Relatively few

have experienced bidding in a live auction and actually know how art changes habe

An auction is a place where some of the rarest, most spectacular, and sought-after items. referred to as lots, can

be purchased. Works of fine art are, in general, bought and sold in auction houses, The first auction of an art
